Birdie’s Cooking Class

A tasty take on eating healthy.

A picture book set in one busy little kitchen, where Birdie discovers that eating well is something you do with your hands — chopping, stirring, tasting — not something you are told to do.

What the story does

an apron, a wooden spoon and one small chef
1

It puts the child at the counter

Birdie doesn’t watch the cooking — Birdie does it. A child who helps make the food is far more willing to taste it.

2

It gives vegetables a part to play

The peppers, the aubergine and the tomatoes get names and jobs. Nobody is told to eat their greens.

3

It ends at the table, together

The last page is a meal everyone had a hand in — which is exactly where a healthy habit sticks.

Talk about it

pick one, not all four

If you had Birdie’s chef hat…

…what is the very first thing you would make?

Count the colours

How many colours are on our plate tonight? Could we add one more?

Taste like a chef

Crunchy, soft, sweet, sour — how would you describe that bite?

Back to you

What is one kitchen job you could do all by yourself?

What comes with it

The book, and everything that keeps the story going

One email unlocks the printables — the videos and the book links are open to everyone.

After the last page

now your child is the storyteller
Storytelling

Retell it their way

Close the book and hand the story over. Pull a spark, and let your child tell what Birdie cooks next — or what happened to the dish that went wrong.

Retell

Tell the story again, but this time you are the chef. What is on the menu?

  1. 1Pick a spark
  2. 2Tell it their way
  3. 3Draw the dish
Role play
