Curiosity & Communication

Hey, Giraffe!

Look up, notice more, wonder out loud.

A picture book about the moment a walk turns into a question — and what happens when a grown-up says “let’s find out” instead of “because.”

What the story does

a walk that turns into a question
1

It slows the walk down

Giraffe stops and looks up. Nothing else happens for a moment — and that moment is the whole point.

2

It makes wondering catching

One character wonders out loud, and the other starts asking too. Children do exactly the same thing.

3

It ends with a question

Not a lesson and not a moral — an opening, so the talking starts when the book closes.

Talk about it

pick one, not all four

If you were standing next to Giraffe…

…what question would you have asked?

Why the highest branches?

Why do you think squirrels always choose the ones at the top?

From up there

If you could see the world from Giraffe’s height, what would you discover?

Back to you

What question surprised your family today?

Storytelling

Retell it their way

Retell

Tell the story again, but this time you are the one who looks up. What do you see?

  1. 1Pick a spark
  2. 2Tell it their way
  3. 3Draw the best bit
Role play

Play as Giraffe and Tadatoon

One of you is Giraffe, who looks up and notices what others miss. One is Tadatoon, who asks Why, How or What if. Then you swap.

Giraffe notices Tadatoon asks Squirrel hides

Ten minutes, outside or by a window.
